BARCODE มีหลากหลายรูปแบบ โดยทั่วไปแล้วเราจะคุ้นเคยกับรูปแบบที่เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของรหัสแท่ง ที่ใช้ตามร้านขายของอุปโภคบริโภคทั่วไป หรือซุปเปอร์มาร์เกต แต่ในความเป็นจริงแล้วรูปสัญลักษณ์ของรหัสแท่งมีหลายรูปแบบ ซึ่งอาจจะแบ่งตามประเภทของอุตสาหกรรมหรือธุรกิจ เช่น ธุรกิจด้านสุขภาพ ด้านการผลิต หรือด้านธุรกิจขายปลีก ซึ่งรูปแบบสัญลักษณ์นี้อาจจะมีความเหมาะสมเฉพาะอุตสาหกรรมหรือธุรกิจที่แตกต่างกัน อาจจะไม่สามารถนำมาใช้ทดแทนกันได้
